What is the procedure for configure the crash dump option for release 11.11 and what resources is necessary (memory, swap, space)

Take a look at /etc/rc.config.d/crashconf and the man page for crashconf(1M). That should get you started.

Hi Adrian,

The default out-of-the-box setup for crash is to use the primary swap space (usually /dev/vg00/lvol2) as the primary dump space.
Just as in swap, you can set up "secondary" space for more dump & give it a higher priority.

You'd have an entry in /etc/fstab to denote it.
Here's example entries creating secondary dump & swap & setting a higher priority:

/dev/vg01/lvswap ... swap pri=0 0 0
/dev/vg01/lvdump ... dump pri=0 0 0

You just need disk space to do this - whatever would be appropriate for your memory size usually 1/2 total memory is a good starting point for dump. Sometimes you need more - sometimes less.

You can check the dump setup with
crashconf -v
This will also tell you exactly how much dump you'd need at that particular moment.

OK, it's telling you what pages would be included in the dump - yes means they would - no means they wouldn't.
Then it telling you how many total pages of memory is on the system & how many would be included in the dump if it happened at that moment. Remember that a page of memory is 4096 bytes.
So it appears you have 2.68 GB of memory that could possibly be dumped & if you dumped at that moment you'd need approx 360 MB of space to hold the dump.
Lastly it tells you that you currently have 2 GB of dump space now & it's the default of /dev/vg00/lvol2 which is also your primary swap.

And finally to enable crash dumps you need to create /dev/rc.config.d/crashconf & it must contain at a minimum
CRASHCONF_ENABLED=1
and if you create secondary dump space it would also need
CRASHCONF_READ_FSTAB=1
You can define what type of memory pages to include with - setting "all" produces full dumps
CRASHCONF_INCLUDED_PAGES=
and to exclude with
CRASHCONF_EXCLUDED_PAGES=
see the crashconf -v output for the types of pages.

Hi Adrian,

According to your crashconf data, you will need (87938 * 4 = 351752 KB) 343 MB of dump space. Your primary swap which is dump as well covers it very well if the system is running at full load. However, if there is nothing running on this box, then this data is insufficient and you will need to run crashconf when everything is running on the system.

Look at /etc/rc.cofnig.d/savecrash file for startup options. You should have SAVECRASH set to 1 and atleast the size of dump space as determined with crashconf.
