Creating printer with another port.

Hi All,

Can I direct one particular printer to use port 9100 instead of 515. ( 515/tcp is defined on /etc/services ). Jetadmin is installed.

Thanks,
veri.

Re: Creating printer with another port.

Normally, JetDirect printers use port 9100. This is the default port that the hpnpf client uses to connect to the JetDirect device. It needs no entry in /etc/services. The port you refer to is the one used by lpr/lpd printers which in HP-UX are referred to as "Remote" printers. All you have to do is use jetadmin to set up a "Network" printer and it will use port 9100. You really should replace your obsolete JetAdmin software with the newer JetDirect version.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Creating printer with another port.

And since it is fairly hard to locate the JetDirect Installer software, here are the links:

10.20: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=18923&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=27350&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=6

11.xx: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=58284&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&os=7&softwareitem=ja-6671-1

The new command: hppi replaces the olf jetadmin command.

Re: Creating printer with another port.

Well , Jetdirect needs no entry in /etc/services.
And default port uses is 9100.

So where it is defined , that default port it will use 9100.
any idea. I have searched the /etc/lp/interface/model.orig/printername file but not found anything about port.

Any idea.? thanks.

Re: Creating printer with another port.

It it set in the /var/spool/lp/interface/myprinter file. Look for the $xPORT option for hpnpf but note that 9100 is the port used by hpnpf unless another port is explicitly requested. Man hpnpf for details.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Creating printer with another port.

It's built in as far as I know...see:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bpj01014

Has some info in it.

Some info on ports:
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~rakerman/port-table.html#printing

Port 515 is for LPD - to make the printer use 9100 - remove it, then add it back as a network printer.
