Can we create username in unix more than eight character?

Yes you can create username with more than 8 characters, however only the first 8 is significant.

Hi Vikas,

that is a security problem. Set usernames with more than 8 characters bypass any PAM security checks.

Anyway there are patches to use usernames with more than 8 characters. For HP-UX 11.00 is PHCO_21833, for 11.11 there isn't specific patch, you should search for the libpam patch.

here is what i had seen on my 11.11 v1 OS

passwd reportgui
Invalid login name.
vipw
reportgui:evPYkwbGgmnLM:...
Logname too long/short

so just made it < 8 characters
