Hi Jeff:
See the discussion in the 'date' manpages for the syntax and options.
Be sure that if you use '-u' that your date/time is in UTC (GMT). Otherwise the argument is presumed to be your localtime.
If you are setting time backwards, it is best to stop your databases, first. I'd also restart the 'cron' daemon afterwards. Setting time forwards (DST, perhaps?!?) isn't an issue. However, if you are "fixing" a DST issue because you didn't get the patch into your system, beware that the old rules will run in three weeks to set your localtime ahead, again!
