Re: direct map&indirect map

If u r talking about NFS.

Direct map: Symbolic links are created from the configured mount points to the corresponding mount points under /tmp_mnt.

Indirect map: A symbolic link is created from the parent directory of the configured mount points to the corresponding parent directory under /tmp_mnt.

For example:
exported direcory on server: /home

local mount point: /tmp_mnt/home
actual local dir: /home

Direct map: Link will be between /home/shawn and /tmp_mnt/home/shawn

Indirect map: Link will be between /home and /tmp_mnt/home

u can differ between direct and indirect by looking at /etc/auto_master file entries start with "/-" are direct mounted ones and absolute directory(say /home) is auto mounted.

You can go through following link for detailed discussion:

Re: direct map&indirect map

Hi Shawn,

Satish's answer is correct if brief. I'm not sure that I can do any better. If you are really interested I would get a copy of the O'Reilly Book 'Managing NFS and NIS'. It is excellent.
