Directory refresh problem

Hi,

I have an itanium 2 running HP-UX B.11.22. Sometimes, when old files are restored back from tape to a directory I can not see those files when I list them with a "ls -l" command in the current directory. However, if I list them with them full names they will show up. It looks as if the OS has a directory cache/refresh problem. Does anyone know there is a patch to fix this problem? Thanks.

Re: Directory refresh problem

May be that you are listing them when backup has not restored them completely.
When you do
ll file, do you perms set on it??

Re: Directory refresh problem

With very few people on HP-UX 11.22, I doubt if you
will get any good answer. I'm not sure I can answer
this either, but I see 2 patches that _might_ be of
some use to you. Those are Patch PHKL_31152
Patch PHKL_28936. I'm not sure if they will fix the
problem, but you could try installing them and see
if things improve.

Re: Directory refresh problem

Are these local files or NFS? There are some caching mount options associated with NFS.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Directory refresh problem

RAC,
The restore is complete and I can list those files if I use "ll " However, "ll *" will not show those files.

Biswajit,
Looking at the description of those patches that you gave me I am not sure they will solve the problem. But thanks for looking up. Is there a patch bundle to upgrade HP-UX 11.22 to HP-UX 11.23 or the latest? I don't have the latest CD.

Clay,
These are NFS automount. I don't have this problem with HP-UX 10.20 clients.

Thanks.

Re: Directory refresh problem

NFS under 10.20 is quite a bit different. In fact, under 11.x, you have the option of udp or tcp. I think if you play with the mount options (and look for NFS/automount patches), you will find your problem. I find it interesting that the most significant data had to be dragged out of you.

That bit of info was missing in the first post. The
patches I suggested will not help you as they are not
NFS related.

I think you should consider moving to 11.23 if you
can.

Re: Directory refresh problem

NFS is defintely very quirky with timing. first: are you restoring the files using the local machine, or restoring the files using the remote machine? Do the filenames start with the (very special) character . (dot)? If so, ls * and ll * will never show files that start with a period (they are hidden files). Whereas ls or ll will always work.

Check the permissions of the parent directory. 700 permissions will unusual effects on being able to 'see' a file with ls/ll.

Re: Directory refresh problem

Clay, I didn't see any patch for NFS/automount for HP-UX 11.22. What mount options can help prevent this problem?

Biswajit, Is there a free patch bundle from HP website to upgrade from HP-UX 11.22 to 11.23?

Bill, I am restoring files from a remote server. The server export the automount points. Server is HP-UX 11.0 PA-RISC. Client is HP-UX 11.22 Itanium 2. Files have no special chars. File permissions are 664; dir permissions are 777. Don't think it has anything to do with permission or special chars.

No, you have to either ux-update or (better still)
cold install 11.23. HP-UX 11.23 is a major release, so
talk to HP representative for upgrading.

Re: Directory refresh problem

BTW, does your system have PHNE_30084, the
11.22 NFS patch? If no, you might want to install
that and see if it helps.

If you are consistantly able to reproduce the problem,
you might want to go back to your HP representative
and report the problem and see if they know about
this.

Re: Directory refresh problem

Biswajit,

Thanks. I plan to install patch PHCO_28124 and PHNE_30084.
