Disk mirroring question

Hello all,

I have a 10.20 UX workstation. Its disk is about to crash (I can hear screeching noise), so I would like to copy the contents of this disk to another one that I've already installed in this machine. Is this possible? Is there any way to 'clone' the contents on the first disk on the second one, toggle it as bootable, remove the damaged one and keep working as if noting happened?

Any input on this will be appreciated.

Do you have MirrorDisk/UX available ? if so look at this book

and other threads regarding mirroring.

Also consider using ignite to perform a tape backup (make_tape_recovery).

You can also clone the disk with dd, but without mirror/ux there will likely be a service disruption when the disk fails.

Hello,

After taking a look at the procedure on http://www.dbaoncall.net/references/ht_mirror_boot_dsk.html it seems to be fairly simple. However, I don't understand the need of having MirrorUX installed. It's not on my system:

> hostname root:-> swlist -l fileset | grep -i mirror
> hostname root:->

... but all of the commands user on that procedure seem to be available on my system.

Any info about this?

MirrorDisk-UX is an optional package that allows mirroring.

The commands shown on the website are included w/ Logical Volume Manager (LVM) but the "-m" option of the lvextend command probably wont work w/o MirrorDisk. (Don't know, as I've not worked on a system that didn't have both).

Hi,

Without MirrorUX product you will not be able to use "-m" option with lvextend.

Best option for your situation is to used the command "dd".

Lets assume the root disk is /dev/dsk/c0t5d0 and the spare disk is /dev/dsk/c0t4d0.

Now execute the following command to copy the root disk entirely..

dd if=/dev/rdsk/c0t5d0 of=/dev/rdsk/c0t4d0 bs=1024000

If the boot disk fails, while you reboot, remove the root disk, change the scsi target of the spare disk to "5" and boot the machine.
