elm help

I use elm routinely to send files to various users each day (typically exception reports, etc.) Simple ASCII text files. What I need some consultation on is a technique that I can use to send e-mails with binary files attached. I can send the desired e-mail using elm in interactive mode, but I don't know how (or if it is possible) to send files as attachments using a command line in a shell script.

The files must arrive as attachments rather than inline text and the binary nature of the data must be preserved.

Am I getting confused, or is this impossible to do with elm in non-interactive mode?

I don't have to use elm if there is some other tactic that will work. The main point is that the receiving end of this transmission is at another company and the rules of engagement are out of my control.

I'd really appreciate any insight that anyone might have.

Thanks.
