You don't need to use cron....
We use activate and deactivate scripts called from netbackup.
We are in an SAP environment, so our scripts use brbackup....
All you really need to do is add your bcv split to your activate script.

We do offline because the client wants it - we do online during the week, then on Saturdays, an offline.
Some of our environments are SAP and some are not - so we can't use brbackup for them.
