EMS/STM configuration question

I've been looking into how to configure EMS/STM and SNMP so we can monitor our systems via Tivoli. I think I have it all figured out, but, while updating STM on a system, I noticed a "problem"... that being the monitor configurations in /var/stm/config/tools/monitor were overwritten with the HP defaults, which don't include any SNMP notififactions. Is there a way to keep customized configurations from wiped out when updating? If not, is it "safe" to restore these monitor configurations from the older version?
