Erase data

Hi all,

Any idea of any utility I can use to completely erase/delete data from an HPUX system?

We are implementing a DR test at a 3rd party site and management is kinda concerened about this data being able to be viewed some time later, any ideas other than a big magnet ;-)

Re: Erase data

There are some utilities that can do what you want. Search for "erase disk" or something similar.

One way I do it is as follows.

Create /dev/zero file.
mknod /dev/zero c 4 0x000003

dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/rdsk/cxtxdx bs=1024k

Repeat the procedure for few times.

Re: Erase data

If you are using some sort of disk arrays at the site, also make absolutely sure that you, or someone at the site, wipe out ALL of the LUN definitions on whatever disk array you use.

Doing that will make it that much more difficult to retrieve the data later.

Re: Erase data

RAC's response of
dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/rdsk/cxtxdx bs=1024k
was obviously supposed to be
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/cxtxdx bs=1024k

... happens to everyone ...
