EVA on HP-UX without SecurePath

Hi,

PV links are good enough for servers which are not mission critical, and I would prefer not having to invest in SecurePath for these.

But... is there any way to identify EVA disks on HP-UX if I don't have SecurePath and spmgr?

Presenting just one disk results in a lot of paths in an ioscan. I can use the hardware path to try to match the disks together, but long-term management of these disks will be difficult.

Points will be awarded, thanks

Re: EVA on HP-UX without SecurePath

EVA3000 and EVA5000 you can't use PVLinks. But you can present it over a single path.

You didn't say which version of EVA you are talking about. The newer ones, 4000, 6000 and 8000 can use pvlinks and you don't need Securepath.

So if you are okay with the fact, that you could have issues if your SAN Port or HBA were to flake out. It could cause you some grief.

With our first EVA we tried not using securepath (We were lead to believe we didn't need anything additional and could use pvlinks). We could present the disks, just not over two paths. Ioscan does show them from what I remember as some HSV100/110 disks. I kind of remember it being pretty obvious.

Re: EVA on HP-UX without SecurePath

It's an EVA8000.

Yes I can see them in ioscan, but as it creates 8 devices for eacth lun, if in the future I present 20 disks to this server, I'll end up with 160 device names.

I'd like to know how I can match the device names with their location in the EVA without having the use the hardware path which is not really helpful, or buying SecurePath which is overkill for non mission-critical servers.

Thanks

Re: EVA on HP-UX without SecurePath

I creates 8 devices because there are 8 different paths to the LUN. I don't think you want to hide the I/O complexity in ioscan, since you really want to see that all the paths are working. The place to hide it is in 'sam'. What does 'sam' show? If it isn't what you want, then you should make the request to hp for an enhancement. No guarantee they would do it, but if you don't ask, it likely won't get as much attention as it would if you (and other users) do.
