Exceed Questions

Hi,

I have recently installed exceed 6.1 and I am running HP Common Desktop environment, I have a couple of problems that are bugging me.
Firstly I can cut & paste within the CDE environment however I cannot cut & paste from the CDE to my PC, i.e to notepad running on my pc.
Secondly, when I want to access my desktop on my PC the only way I can manage to access the desktop is to completely logout of the CDE environment.

Is there a way of accessing my desktop without logging out of CDE and can I cut and paste from the CDE environment to my PC?

Thanks
Oktay

Re: Exceed Questions

Hi,

About cut & paste, check this link:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x41f8274ea6dd57478ef19dfcb13974d9,00.html

About your second question, have you tried using Alt+TAB, or click minimize in the exceed icon?

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Zigor

Re: Exceed Questions

Thanks for your reply however the link that you supplied does not answer my question about cutting and pasting as most of the replies are from an exceed terminal emulation and not within the CDE environment.

As for the alt tab, this works fine to toggle with other opened applications however it does not enable to gain access to my pc's desktop.

For example If I use the minimise all button on my task bar it minimises every application apart from the CDE application.

Re: Exceed Questions

I use exceed 6.2 and the cut and paste feature does not work from a CDE window to a unix window. You need to upgrade to version 7.0 to get this. To fix your second problem you can use Alt+tab as suggested or change your Xconfig (in exceed) 'screen definition' from 'multiple windows' to 'single window. If you need to cut and paste, I just use email.

# cat file | elm -s "" user@domain.com

Re: Exceed Questions

Thanks Zigor and Michael for your replies,

The single window setting did the trick, I can now minimise happily.

As for the cutting and pasting, what a pain.. There are certain things you would like to cut and paste into and out of a CDE environment like commands, usernames etc etc but this version does not allow it...bummer... who designed this version of CDE exceed?

Anyway have to live with it I guess at least the typing skills will improve.

Thanks again

Re: Exceed Questions

I use Exceed 8 and the cut and paste works correctly. Also if you want to minimize your exceed window you can hit the window button on your keyboard so that the taskbar and start menu pop up. Then hit the show desktop button. This works perfectly for me when i tried it this morning. Hope it helps

Re: Exceed Questions

When you are in the multi-windows CDE environment you can either cut and paste with:

Ctrl+Insert / Ctrl+Paste
or
Highlight the text with your mouse by dragging over it then, click the middle mouse to paste.

This will depend on the terminal emulation version that X is using.

I hope this helps.

Re: Exceed Questions

Andrew Yes - for CDR you can highlight and use either the middle mouse button or use both the right and left buttons simultaneously to paste from one CDE window to another. (I'm not sure why I assumed he was trying to copy from CDE to windows (notepad))

Re: Exceed Questions

If the only windows you are using in CDE are terminal windows, using CDE is like driving a bus to get the mail...you can run a terminal emulator in telnet mode and reduce the network bandwidth required by 100:1 with no cut&paste issues. Xwindows was never designed to work with a PC so while the Xwindow tools look like they are on the PC, they are children of the Xwindow emulator. A better alternative is to run an HP smart terminal emulator such as Reflection for HP (note: not the same product as Reflection/X). You'll gain scapable fonts, auto-login controls, simple color and size controls, a macro recorder for automated tasks, even VTxxx emulation if needed.

Re: Exceed Questions

Oktay,

For cutting and pasting from Exceed to your desktop, right click on the Exceed bar (down in your windows taskbar), select Edit -> Copy X Selection -> To Clipboard. Then you can go into Notepad and Ctrl-v to paste. There are other cool features in there also!

Regards,

John

Re: Exceed Questions

Thanks for your all your responses.

I have found that you cannot cut and paste from CDE to a desktop application. As suggested by Bill I am using exceed terminal emulator to perform these tasks and reverting back to X windows only when I require to run a GUI application.

Cheers
