I would like to know what steps i need to follow to bring the disk array power down / up safely. I do not want the data to be corrupted on that drives if power goes down.

Solution1) Determine what file systems are on the disk array
2) Determine what applications use those file systems
3) Shutdown those applications
4) Unmount those file systems
5) Deactivate the volume groups that house the logical volumes for those file systems
6) Shut down the disk array with the appropriate commands.
When power is restored:
1) Power up the disk array
2) Run an ioscan to verify the disks are visible (ie. everything is CLAIMED and not NO_HW)
3) Activate the VGs
4) Mount the file systems
5) start your applications

Re: external disk array
It is safer to shutdown servers after taking required approval and then proceed for the power shutdown of array.
If no data access request will be there then no chance of data corruption due to sudden power failure.
