ftio Backup
does ftio write files on the tape in compressed format..?

No. ftio does not have a compress option while writing. But as with any archiving tool it should write any already compressed files on the filesystem to tape.

ftio has been obsolete and definitely not recommended for more than 15 years. ftio (and tar, cpio, pax, dump, fbackup, etc) does not compress anything before sending it to the tape drive. Modern tape drives have compression built-in to the drive itself so if you use the compressed or BEST density device file, the data is compressed. What version of HP-UX are you using?
