going back in time

I cut my teeth on hp-ux, but haven't touched it in several years. I do have access to a j2240 and a 730, both running 10.2. I have a request to resurrect hp-ux 9.x on one of them.

did the j2240 support 9.x? I forget.

any suggestions as to where I can locate 9.x installation media?

adv(thanks)ance

Re: going back in time

The J2240 is much newer and if memory serves would run only on HP-UX 10.20 and later.

The 730 was one of the initial "Snakes" workstations. and I still have some of the glossy photos and handouts from the introduction. It will run the odd-numbered versions of HP-UX 9.X (I would go for HP-UX 9.07).

Finding media that still is readable is left as an exercise for the reader.

Re: going back in time

Shalom chuck,

9.04 media: Someone's closet or Ebay, if you are lucky.

I think 9.04 was supported on that hardware but that doesn't mean the install will be easy or fun. Better be a good reason for it.

Re: going back in time

The 730 should run 9.05 or 9.07. It will not run 9.04 as the even numbers were only for series 800 (aka, servers), not series 700's (workstations). As far as I know, the J2240 did not exist when 9.07 (the latest 9.0 for workstations) so no, it won't even load. The 710, 720 and 730 should all work OK on 9.07.

Re: going back in time

thanks to all for validating my memories. I've found a used hardware vendor who will sell me a 735/125 preloaded with 9.05. I think this is the best combination of performance and OS we can hope for.

Does anyone else get the Huey Lewis song from "Back To The Future" stuck in their head after reading the subject line?
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"
