Hardware requirements

Hi all,

Nowhere can I find figures in memory, disk footprint, etc. for installing HPUX 11.0. In this forum there were some URL's, but they didn't funcion anymore. I am looking into requirements because we're doing a country wide upgrade to Oracle 8i and need complete figures for advising what HPUX servers to use...

Just: xx MB RAM
xx MB Swap
xx MB diskspace
etc.

Thanx already!

Re: Hardware requirements

hi,

not a simple question! To get hpux 11 up & "running" as little as 128MB RAM and 4GB diskspace will probably be sufficient.
Now, if you want a fast Oracle 8i server, you are going to need several Gigabytes of memory, and many fast disks; the ultimate size will depend on the size of the database and number of users.

Thierry.
All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.

Re: Hardware requirements

Hi,

The correct answer is depends,
depends on concurrent users, type of application, Oracle configuration etc...

Can you give us more information on that?

Regards,

Justo.

Re: Hardware requirements

Hi there,

Quite simple actually (tearing off dependecies). I need figures (and actually only calculation figures) of space needed to install HP UX 11 on D320/D330/A500/L1000 as a part of a calculation I am going to make for customers in sizing up a server for their needs!

That's all... Folks!

Re: Hardware requirements

Hi,

The first thing that you need to know is your systems current performance and usage which is the reason why you should upgrade. Then get your managements standard requirement for performance and usage or SLA's - your recommendation should be able to handle both before the next upgrade come.

System performance and usage will always be based on the number of users, connections, processes, file system, application requirements, ...etc.

thanks.

Re: Hardware requirements

Jan,

??? A minimum of 4GB disk is required to install an Operating
Environment.
??? A minimum of 128MB RAM is required to install 11i; however, 256MB is recommended (especially for full Enterprise and Mission Critical OE installations).

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/os/11i/hpwoldfullpres.pdf

Also, make sure you use the Dec 2001 media.

Now for a reality check. If you only plan on allocating 256mb to HPux, and 4gb of disk, then you severly restrict the performance of the OS. I wouldn't start the OS on anything less than 1gb of memory and 9gb of disk. If you add oracle to the mix, which means you need more memory, then you should allocate more disk for swap, which means root should either have another 9gb disk for a total of 18gb. From experience: the speed of the D-class servers will suck, and not much better for K-class's. The A's, L's, N's, and rp8400's are the way to go.

Re: Hardware requirements

Have a look at this manual:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5971-0642/5971-0642.html

Once you are there, click on the 'Preparing for Software Migration' chapter heading and then click on 'System Requirements'.

It will give you absolute MINIMUM system requirements for installing HP-UX 11.0.

If you are interested in HP-UX 11i:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5185-6511/5185-6511.html

Have a look at that manual and then follow the instructions for the 11.0 manual to get to system requirements.
