How to clone a setup ?

Hi,

we have two n-class server. One is running a new setup, latest patches ...

The other one is in a bad state. I want to
clone the first installation onto the second old
machine. What would be the best way ?

The most important issue: We have a couple of hpux licenses on this host (mirror disk, online jfs, compiler ...) How can I save the license
files ?

Bye, Peer

Re: How to clone a setup ?

Hi Peer:

You could create an Ignite 'make_tape_recovery' image of the "good" server and use it to Ignite (clone) the second.

The codewords for appplication products are stored in '/var/adm/sw/.codewords' so you should be able to secure and replace the proper one.

Re: How to clone a setup ?

The easiest way to clone is to use ignite. Take a make tape recovery of the "good" system and do an interactive restore on the "bad" system.

If the target system has additional software licenses you will have to reinstall them from CD - if you do not have the codewords you can get them from HP ahead of time.

You should also check for patches for the additional software you add.

1. Save existing licenses.
All the HP-UX license codewords are normally stored in /var/adm/sw/.codewords.

Just keep a backup of this file ( check that have all the licensed products avaliabke in this file).

This will have the list of codewords and the CD PART CODES required to install the application. you will need the CD media listed.

Thanks

Re: How to clone a setup ?

My internal "safety nag" voice compells me to comment that you will want a full backup of the "bad" system before you blow it away. It may seem like a cruddy system right now until you reload the "good" system on it and suddenly you need something from the "bad" system in order to make a forgotten application work. HP Licenses are almost never the ONLY thing needed to reload a system (Have you ever had to fiddle with relicensing MicroFocus' COBOL? - wow!).

Good luck.

Re: How to clone a setup ?

Hi,

thank you for the hints.
One last question: Can I use the network to
store everything, or do I have to use a tape ...

Re: How to clone a setup ?

When you say "everything" I assume you mean the Ignite backup. Yes, you can do a make_net_recovery to an Ignite server if you have one. Otherwise, just run a make_tape_recovery to a DAT or DLT drive for the sake of time.
