Re: HP 9000 backup
Rather than use tar, I recommend that you use fbackup, tar won't backup the whole system properly. The easiest way is to do it from 'sam' but I suggest that you search the forums for 'fbackup'.

John

Re: HP 9000 backup
B. cd /
tar cvf /dev/rmt/0m .
III. Tar is a very old tool and is probably your worst choice unless you want portability across systems. It's rather useless for OS recovery and it's much slower than HP's freebie fbackup.
You really should use a two-pronged approach: a) Use Ignite to backup your vg00 stuff for OS recovery. b) Use fbackup for your regular data backups. Moreover, fbackup will backup files over 2GB which the standard will not do although there are patches available to icrease that limit.

Re: HP 9000 backup
Try: tar -cvf /dev/rmt/0m
or whatever tape drive your using instead of 0m.
It is better to use fbackup:
# fbackup
see man fbackup for more information.
-g: graph file: to include/execlude files in backup
-c: fbackup configuration parameters, defaults are not optimal.

Re: HP 9000 backup
One thing I would like to suggest to you, is backing up the operating system using the 'ignite' tool.
If something goes wrong you can not only restore files, but you can boot off the tape. Backing all other filesystems with fbackup is far better and far more flexible than using tar.
To use ignite
# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/?mn
If you haven't got ignite on your system, I suggest you invest some time in getting it. Here is the link:
