I tried it on 11.00 and althought I got all the depots to install, I couldn't get the environment to come up.
I've never liked CDE and wanted to make my X a little more Linux-like. I know. Bad Steve. Steve should like CDE.
Problem is Steve doesn't

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
I've never tried it, but it sounds like fun. I remember reading a while back that HP was going to move away from CDE and make Gnome their default X windows environment.

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
A couple of comments for you:
1) I think I can verify that gnome is the direction of the moment - see this thread (and it's referenced thread):
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x480f543254bfd611abdb0090277a778c,00.html
2) Despite my whining in the above thread about converting yet again, I am planning on attempting exactly that - probably in January. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
I'm just trying to get ahead of the curve, plus I think gnone has a much better User Interface.
This is one area I can't go to support on because they don't support it on 11.X
I'm still itching to try it.

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
I had it running on a test box a couple of months ago. I don't remember having any problems getting it to run, I just followed the install instructions provided by HP.

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
I installed gnome on my B180L. Pretty impressive. First release was not stable on my system, gave me core files from time to time, especially while running file manager. Also loaded my network even if I was not doing anything (just sent packets and broadcast all the time). Conclusion - had to revert back to CDE :(. I was told second release fixed lots of problems. However did not try it.
OS - HP-UX 11.0.
Installation along requested over 300 MB under /opt + lots of GNU libraries + gcc.
Pretty heavy for my B180L. Unless you have fast new system, I would not recommend it.
Hope this helps,
0leg

I have downloaded it and will give it a shot.
Thanks for all your help. Though I found the link independently, 10 points for the guy who "disappointed" me.
I wish I could find out when HP adds support for things.
For the record, I can post the support call where I was told it wasn't supported.
Thanks.

Re: HP-UX admin challenge.
The install instructions are here:
http://www.software.hp.com/products/GNOME/install.html
Step 8 has you change the default display manager from CDE to GNOME.
