HP UX console

Hi,

Its Rajesh here,

We just changed IP address of 2 HP UX servers, rebooted ,
Both servers not coming to prompt , but Pinging, Now Our we got somehow one enabled by GSP prompt by going to ctrl-B mode. but other HPUX9000 server not at all coming to Console so that we can assing hostname to new IP,
Before we were getting error "NFS Server not responded still trying "
Now no error no prompt nothing but pinging , no telnet. we are directly connecting to HPUX servers with Serial to USB converter via Hyperterminal.

Can we get some suggestion.... so that i can have console......

it was not coming on webconsole too...

Thanks & Regards,
Rajesh.

Re: HP UX console

Hi,
I hope you used set_parms to do your changes ?

Boot into single user mode and bring up the machine step-by-step.
Seems you have NFS disks mounted onto/off server ?
What does the boot messages say ?

Hi,

It's Mark here!

I think you're going to have to bring it up in single user mode and amend some files. How to boot into single user mode depends on the version of OS you're using, so if in doubt tell us the version.

1. Make sure the new address is in /etc/hosts

2. make sure the new address is in /etc/rc.config.d/netconf

3. make sure the new address is configured on your DNS server and that DNS is reloaded.

You can then bring the server back up. If you're using NIS there will be other files to amend as well. Just say the word and I will list them.

Re: HP UX console

Hi, Rajesh,

It seems to me that your servers didn't start completely because "NFS Server not responded still trying". You have to wait until NFS server startup reach "timeout" the startup will continue. Or, you can try to interrupt the startup processes by key conbination from the console -- if you still have that console connection.

Check your console connection, make sure you connect to the correct port. If you have a blank screen, try clt-b. If you receive GSP prompt it means your console works. type co to go back console.

You may need to boot the system in single user mode and disable NFS server, client from the system startup.

Check the IP, DNS setup and also LAN cable, LAN card .... if you stuck at NFS server or sendmail LAN configuration, it means you have problem with network connection (software or hardware).

Re: HP UX console

The problem is that your networking configuration is messed up (but you know that already). NFS is completely intolerant of network misconfigurations. You can try the following keystrokes to terminate the NFS startup:

CTRL | (control and vertical bar)
CTRL DEL (control and Delete key)
CTRL [ (control and left bracket)

Otherwise, you'll have to reboot the server into single user mode and disable all the NFS startup scripts by editing the nfs config file:

/etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf

Re: HP UX console

i suppose the network is up but probably unable to mount the ones specified in /etc/fstab what you can do is type ctrl+alt+| together so that it would try and stop for right now, else use ctrl + B and reset the system, go to single user mode, correct the n/w settings and get it onto the run level 3 ( init 3)

Re: HP UX console

Shalom,

If you used sam for the ip address change its likely sam put a double entry in /etc/hosts which can cause the entire problem.

Fixing the issue may require going to single user mode.

If you have console access, you should be able to ctrl-b to get into GSP and co to get console mode.

Hopefully there is no conflict between the system ip and the console ip, which normally have nothing to do with each other.

Re: HP UX console

Hi Rajesh,

I am not sure what your able to see from hyper terminal. you can probable capture the hyper terminal output and send so that issue will be some more clear.

If your are able to get the GSP loging
type "co" from GSP prompt to get the console. In hyperterminal set the terminal type as vt100. Normally GSP will be configured for HP TERM. But vt100 will work properly.

you should use null modem cable to connect the from GSP to laptop.

Re: HP UX console

ping is a very low level command and your system will respond if a portion of the networking is running. But without telnet or a console, you have to reboot into single user mode. To get into single user mode, just cycle the power (turn off and back on). Watch the console and when the selftests are finished, you'll see a message about "press any key to interrupt the boot process" so press Enter or something and it will ask you about boot Primary (answer yes) and Interact with IPL (answer yes). Then at the prompt, type hpux -is and you will be taken to single user mode.

Now you can't edit anything in single user mode until you mount /var /tmp and /usr. This requires 2 steps:

fsck /dev/vg00/some_rlvol
mount /var

repeat for each volume. You'll need the rlvol name for those 3 mountpoints. Now you can run vi to fix /etc/hosts, etc.

Re: HP UX console

Did you type CTRL-B? If HP-UX is stuck with NFS and you can't break out, you can reach the GSP with CTRL-B. Now I am assuming that all your servers are newer models (N-class, L-class, rp-series). If your problem server is fairly old (D-class, K-class, F,G,H,I-class, etc) then you won't have a GSP prompt. If sll else fails, reboot the machine by turning the power off and then on again.

Re: HP UX console

Hi All,

Thanks for the full support,
I got the prompt #

Its workig fine.

I have powered off completely then it startd giving NFS error
I stoped it by typing ctrl [, ctrl del,

It gave me GSP prompt , As it happened just because of Chaning IP,
I rewrite /etc/hosts with name with new IP..
Now the server is fine working...

Thanks all for the full support.
