If Windows Operating System can be installed on Itanium processors then does it mean that it will be cheaper as we know that we get windows server on intel platform between 1000-2000 USD ?
If this is so then i am thinking we can load hpux on this same machine instead of windows.
I am not sure whether itanium procesor hardware peripheral would be same for windows and hpux.
Regards,
Shiv

SolutionYour first question is on Microsoft License policy. This is really the wrong place to ask that question. My understanding is that Microsoft has a different pricing policy for the 64 bit version of the OS than the 32 bit. Usually the newer OS is more expensive, because as you know Bill Gates is poor and needs more money.
I am in favor of you loading HP-UX on your Itanium because HP-UX is a better OS. With the single exception of the exchange server there is nothing that can't be done on HP-UX server that windows provides.
Primary domain controller, there are docs about that. LDAP server, HP-UX can do that. Samba file and print sharing, no problem.
As far as peripherals go, what hardware works with the Itanium systems is more limtited and more expensive right now than what works with 32 bit intel.
As far as support goes for various printers and such, unless you use something really esoteric, it can be supported easily by an HP-UX samba server.

Re: hpux on Itanium
The idea is not bad , and to be noted that Itanium supports Windows 2003 server and having different pricing policy ,
Itanium2 supports following OS : Linux*, HP-UX*, Windows Server* 2003, OpenVMS*, HP NonStop OS*, and FreeBSD*
Here is the link from Intel:
http://www.intel.com/products/processor/itanium2/index.htm
Also check this link , for running all the major OS , on Intel Itanium2 Hardware:
http://www.intel.com/cd/ids/developer/asmo-na/eng/19186.htm
Hope this helps ,
hth,
Raj.

It's same Shiv. You can go through the following web link:

Re: hpux on Itanium
Also for installing windows you have to have DVD ROM but for HP-UX, it is optional

Re: hpux on Itanium
If you are planning to procure hp-ux and Windows server, Itanium Box is suggested options. Most of hardware peripherals are supported in both environments.
Typically budget for hp-ux and windows server will also be creteria for such selection.

Re: hpux on Itanium
Secondly, as hpux would be available on intel platform (itanium) it would be similar to linux on pc server in cost perspective.

Re: hpux on Itanium
Do not forget, you cannot install HP-UX operating system on any Itanium 2 based server. For example,If you buy Intel Itanium2 processor and a supermicro motherboard and assemble a new server with them, HP-UX will not install on that server.HP-UX designed for HPâ s Itanium2 based server. There are some special chipsets on HPâ s motherboard that you cannot find them on other motherboards.
HP-UX will be installed and run just on HP Integrity and HP9000 servers.

Re: hpux on Itanium
As you know PA8900 is the latest HP PA-RISC Processor(1GHz).However new Itanium 2 processors, like mx2 or Madison 9M, has better performance than PA-8900.

Re: hpux on Itanium
As long the hardware is HP, i believe that you can install HP-UX on the itanium-based server.
Proprietary OSes usually are not supported on other hardware than their own.
There is also the aspect desupport that you should not ignore.
For business-critical production servers, i would not recommend to go for unsupported environments.
kind regards

Re: hpux on Itanium
At list price the Windows based server is actually almost $2,000 more expensive. The Windows version needs a Management CPU Card that is not required for an HP-UX system and Windows is actually more expensive than Foundation OE HP-UX.
Another point, it sounded like you were proposing buying the system with Windows loaded and then reloading it from HP-UX CDs you already have. That would be an unlicensed version and I would not recommend doing that.
