Hyperterminal Settings

We need to us Hyperterminal with a laptop to connect to our downed server. Does anyone know the specific settings required. I'm assuming
bits per second 9600
Data bits 8
Parity none
Stop bits 1
Flow control Hardware

Thanks

Re: Hyperterminal Settings

Let me add my $.02......
Go to your friendly neighborhood geek store and pick up an RS-232 mini-tester such as this one: http://www.capetronics.com/rs_232_mini_tester.htm
or
http://www.elexp.com/cpt_45mt.htm

Its a quick way to visually ensure that all the wires in the RS-232 line are connected properly. When so, the RD and TD lights on the tester will be green, and the rest red. This is an invaluable gadget for anyone who regularly uses RS-232 communications. Its been a part of my geek gadget bag for ~15 years. I use mine FREQUENTLY.

They're not expensive. You can usually get them at the same place where they sell cables and null modems. You may have to purchase additional adapters to convert 9 pin to 25 pin connectors however. These should be part of any sysadmin toolkit.

Scott

If its newer than a k-class and the GSP/MP is setup on the network you will not need hyperterminal in serial mode ;)

Otherwise it does look good to me if you did not change the default settings.

Re: Hyperterminal Settings

As mentioned, the serial cabling is more of a problem than the settings. 9600, 8N1 are fine. There are, however, two completely incompatible serial cables. One is designed for modems and the other is designed for terminals (PCs) and printers. The former is call a straight-thru and the latter is called a crossover or null-modem cable. And depending on the server, you may have a 25pin or a 9pin serial port.

So to add to your toolbox, get a straight-through cable, a 9pin null-modem adapter, two 9pin adapters: female/female, male/male, a 9pin to 25pin adapter and two 25pin adapters: F/F and M/M. That kit will allow you to connect to any serial port (other than the completely non-standard RJ-45 serial ports found on some network appliances).

Re: Hyperterminal Settings

We went as far as upgrading the version of HyperTerminal and the keystrokes still didn't take. Upon a suggestion from an HP installer, we installed Reflections. We set up the connection and it worked. We spent 2+ hours trying to get HyperTerminal to work. From install to final output, it took me all of 15 minutes to get Reflections to work. We used the same cables, same settings and everything.

How crazy is that.

Thanks for the responses.
