There is no tape driver on serverB. How can i make ignite backup OS of serverB via tape on serverA. Pls give me sample procedure ( tape on server A is /dev/rmt/0mn)
serverA:172.16.0.9
ServerB:172.16.0.10
Whenerver serverB has problem (crash) how can I recover from Ignite backup tape?

Re: ignite server , ignite client create - How to

Please have a look into the Ignite-UX Administration Manual:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90849/

In short:

Backup to Ignite server is done via NFS and friends to a specific location (usually /var/opt/ignite/recovery/archives)
You can boot from lan to restore serverB

usually search lan isl or (the following is not completely correct syntax)
boot (hw-path of nic)@ip:/opt/ignite/boot/WINSTALL

via the mac adress recorded in /var/opt/ignite/clients/0xma:ca:dr:es:s0 ignite will recognize the client and offer the recovery archive.

Ignite is very easy to setup on the server, download it, install it and run /opt/ignite/bin/ignite - if possible from an X Session. There is a walkthrough dialog that will tell You most things.

make notes, afterwards re-read the admin guide and redo the setup.

a client backup is taken with the command /opt/ignite/bin/make_net_image
important parameters are
- archive directory (where the dump of vg00 will go)
- client directory (where the client configuration is saved)
- server hostname

You need a working setup of remsh (optional, not needed for recovery), nfs and forward and reverse dns.

ssh instead of remsh is possible, but needs some extra reading and effort. right now I'm not sure if it's already supported.

If You ever decide to put the ignite server into a MC/SG environment watch out to add the parameter '-s' to tftpd. (see man page)

just try it out, one hardly ever has to many backups :)

Hi florian
Pls check command "make_net_image " I can not find this command on my sys.
I think you mistype. it is "may_sys_image"!

Re: ignite server , ignite client create - How to

Few notes:

Prior to starting:
make_tape_recovery backup of the client. If something goes wrong, you don't lose the configuration.

Ignite will only LAN boot on an internal built in NIC, not add ins.

You boot at the console of the client, though this can be directed from the server

Intervene at the 10 second prompt.

bo lan.172.16.0.9 install

I can not verify syntax due to the search engine being down.

Re: ignite server , ignite client create - How to

Steven - his client has no tape drive :/
also, the newer add-in nics work (1000BSX, 1000BT), only Vpars are sometimes a bit tricky (especially installing golden images w/o vpar software as I do it every 2nd time)
