ignite server setup

Hi,
We currently use ignite to create weekly make_tape_recovery tapes and cycle 4 tapes and send offsite. As this requires a lot of manual intervention I want to change this to make_net_recovery using an onsite and offsite ignite server. We have a mix of hpux 11.00 (I know it's unsupported but has to stay) and hpux 11iv1. Can the ignite server on hpux 11iv1 handle all these differences in ignite clients? I would appreciate any comments as to whether this would be just as reliable as our current setup or any other advice.
Thanks.

Re: ignite server setup

Shalom,

You don't want to use make_tape_recovery for this.

You want to use make_net_recovery. You archive to a shared NFS mount point, controlled by the Ignite server with read-write privileges for the various Ignite clients.

An Ignite server on HP-UX 11.11 (11iv1) can handle 11i clients.

Current version of Ignite for this platform can not handle 11.00 clients. HP pulls the boot support for the client OS as soon as OS support runs out.

This is going to be very reliable for 11.11 clients, and not help you much at all with 11.00 clients.

If you have a software support contract you may be able to get an archived version of Ignite that supports 11.00 but I doubt it.

Re: ignite server setup

If HP will not assist then:

if you save your old application CDs, you may also be able to find a version of ignite that supports the 11.0 environment.

if so, make sure you do some recovery testing, believe it or not, not all versions of ignite worked ;)

Re: ignite server setup

I run two separate Ignite network servers, one for 11i versions (11.11, 11.23, 11.31), and another for 11.00 and 10.20. The extra disk space on two servers is much cheaper than using tapes, especially when you count labor and reliability (mislabeled, misfiled, lost, etc). My 11i system happens to be 11.23 but could be any of the 3. I use the system to hold client backups (weekly keeping 4 archives), and also to create Golden Images as well as a DVD media source.

I backup only vg00 using make_net_recovery client backup with a simple script and excludes if necessary. The rest of the data is run through fbackup for faster restores.

Re: ignite server setup

Thanks for the replies, looks like an 11.00 and 11i ignite server is the way to go.
