Ignite system image not bootable

Hi all

I have servers 1 (old) and 2 (new) in two separate countries.

If I have an old ignite image from server 1 on tape that doesn't boot on new hardware of server 2 (ignite version used to create the tape image is too old) can I boot server 2 with the OE DVD March 2006 and perform a subsequent recovery/build using the tape image from server 1 ?

In 10 days I can update the "old" version of Ignite on server 1 to circumvent this problem, I'm just trying to sneak time if it's theoretically viable to do this ...?

All advice appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ian

Re: Ignite system image not bootable

Don't expect that the "old" servers OS (including the drivers) will run on your "new" machine!
Assume totally different hardware!

BTW, what we're talking about?

"Old" may be 1/2, 1, 2 or even 15 years.

;-))

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Different proc sets on RP7420. The "old" will not work.

Should get a message when the boot fails about unknown processors.

Re: Ignite system image not bootable

Hi Tim - yes I'm aware it won't boot off the ignite tape (I know this from past experience), hence my attempt at the workaround using the new server, booting off the OE DVD media -

I'm trying to identify if from that point (ie booted off DVD HP media) am I able to at least read in the image from the old server off tape (without rebooting the new server) - update the ignite release and card drivers + kernel + ignite, then reboot ?

It's a long crazy shot I'm sure, just exhausting all possible options.

Re: Ignite system image not bootable

I fear this is more trouble than it's worth. If you want to copy (for example) user or application data from the old to the new it would be far easier to use something like Data Protector. Do a completely new build on the new server then restore the user/app. data via DP.

Re: Ignite system image not bootable

I would do the following:
- install OS on new server from scratch
- install applications
- import data from old server

This ensures a stable system.

Hope this helps!

Re: Ignite system image not bootable

The reason that the old server image won't boot is because the new hardware is incompatible in many ways. So booting off the DVD doesn't help because the image contains server-specific code. Ignite's design is quite complex to accomodate the massive variety of I/O cards, processors, etc and most of this is behind the scenes during bootup and installation. So restoring the files from the Ignite tape without modification will mess up the I/O config as well as disk volumes.

The newest version of Ignite is the easiest solution, but if this is not an option, you'll have to do a cold install.
