Ignite with a remote device
I am using a remote backup device ( from SAM interface) to make full backup for a hp-ux machine, but how to use this remote device to make an Ignite.
I tried
/opt/ignite/bin/make_recovery -Av -d ws1:/dev/rmt/0m (where ws1 is the name of the remote system) but it didn't work
How to fix it ????
Thanks in advance.

Re: Ignite with a remote device
You can do a make_net_recovery to go to disk on the machine in question and then have a process put that image to tape.
make_recovery btw is obsolete. make_tape_recovery

Re: Ignite with a remote device
You can, as Harry says, do a make_net_recovery to a hard disc on the ignite server. Once this is done, you can make a tape from the networked backup.

Re: Ignite with a remote device
I think it should be possible. I have taken ignite backup of clients in their tape devices from the ignite server.
Unfortunately I have done this only from the ignite GUI. An equivalent command-line option should exist.
Please check the admin manual at http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/B2355-90834.pdf
I am sorry for not able to provide a quick solution for your query.
Cheers,
Mohan.

Re: Ignite with a remote device
Say you are able to use a remote tape drive to create the tape. You then feel secure that you have a recovery tape. Your system crashes and you lose the operating system. Without network connectivity how would you connect to that remote tape drive to reload your system?
Not unlike McDonald's putting a warning on their cups that the coffee is hot. Some people need a little more protection than others.

Re: Ignite with a remote device
I think I have to make a correction here. In my case the recovery of the clients were done from its local tape. But I initiated the backup from the ignite server.
If you are looking to do a make_tape_recovery of your local system on to a remote system's tape device then I am not sure about the feasibility.
Sorry! no points for my posts.
Cheers,
Mohan.
