Re: ioscan command prompting error

Here is what I have here :
/ >ll /sbin/ioscan

/ >what /sbin/ioscan
/sbin/ioscan:

$ PATCH/11.00:PHCO_95238 Dec 15 1998 14:52:58 $

Size is different, and what ouput too.
It's a 64 bit server.

what is your output for :
getconf KERNEL_BITS

Also, do you have another server to copy from ? Or maybe install the latest ioscan patches.

Fred

Re: ioscan command prompting error

try running this command to see if you are picking up an incorrect ioscan:
which ioscan

also try running /sbin/ioscan and see if that fails.
The next question to ask is did this work previously?
If so, what has changed recently, such as patches installed etc.

Re: ioscan command prompting error

Hi

To add to others post, can you rebuild the kernel (mk_kernel)
never give up

Re: ioscan command prompting error

Has this system evere had HP Openview Storage Area Manager components installed on it? Specifically the Storage Allocater component? This component would replace ioscan with another version which wouldn't work when the /sbin/TRAllocater_d daemon wasn't running (and would generate a message much like the one you see). The replaced ioscan is usually renamed as /sbin/LMscan

Re: ioscan command prompting error

which ioscan
should return:
/usr/sbin/ioscan
and that is a logical link:
# ls -al /usr/sbin/ioscan
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root sys 12 Jun 20 2002 /usr/sbin/ioscan -> /sbin/ioscan
and this is the file you run:
# ls -al /sbin/ioscan
-r-xr-xr-x 1 bin bin 217088 Jan 16 2003 /sbin/ioscan

and the output from what is:
what /sbin/ioscan
/sbin/ioscan:
ioscan.c $Date: 2003-01-16 20:00:00 $Revision 80.5.1.2 PATCH_11.00 (PHCO_27818)
iosearch.c $Date: 2003-01-16 18:49:51 $Revision r11ros/2 PATCH_11.00 (PHCO_27818)
$ PATCH/11.00:PHCO_95238 Dec 15 1998 14:52:58 $

make sure that the command 'which' return the correct file!

Re: ioscan command prompting error

I guess the first question you need to answer is 'Is Storage Allocater *supposed* to be installed on this host?' From the dates on the files it has been installed fairly recently (Feb 7), so whoever installed will hopefully own up and explain whether is needs to be installed or not (it can be installed remeotely through the OV-SAM GUI, so they might not even have logged in to do this, or even thought about the consequences of what they were doing)... If not I would have them remove it and that should fix your problems.

If it does need to be installed - I would suggest asking whovere installed it to fix it!

Re: ioscan command prompting error

Just a note for all sysadmins: DON'T use which or whereis to locate a program or command! The results will be inaccurate because neither command shows what the shell will actually do when you enter ioscan. Instead, always use the type command as in:

type ioscan

To see why which and whereis are not accurate:

which stop
whereis stop
type stop

There are lots of other examples. You need the shell to explain what it will do, wether the command is a shell built-in, an alias, or something found in $PATH.

Re: ioscan command prompting error

Well, since you have LMscan there, try using it.

# LMscan

Otherwise see what you have to do to start the Storage Allocator daemons. There probably should be something in /sbin/init.d that starts these.

Re: ioscan command prompting error

Installing this ioscan patch might resolve your issue of core dump:

PHCO_27818

There was a coredump issue reported with a version of Ignite-UX and ioscan command some time back and has been resolved with latest patches.
