Re: ioscan runs very slow (3-5 min) after 11.31 OE upgrade
no I would follow EMC's advice.
Now its just a cleanup operation. Identify the paths you are not using and pvremove them.
Take heed from the lessons learned here and never use update-ux again.

Re: ioscan runs very slow (3-5 min) after 11.31 OE upgrade
Thanks again for the comment on scsimgr.
Important Question on your previous feedback (NEVER use update-ux):
Question: when upgrading OE 11.31 on production HP-UX 11.23 servers running Oracle 10g, 11g databases servers and/or production SAS 9.1 9.2 servers, how to run OE cold installation without re-installing the SAS and Oracle applications and setup their proper working envirment (java, etc.) That would be a lot of work involved with the DBA team and SAS team. That's why I choose Update-UX.
Please kindly let me know your insight on this. Thanks.
Regards,
Jan

At the very least, you can use 'ioscan' to first *check* when the hardware was last scanned:
# ioscan -t
...and then, if you believe that something should have changed, perform the actual scan. If you have no reason to believe that hardware configuration has changed, ask the kernel instead of re-scanning the hardware:
# ioscan -kfn
# ioscan -kN

That's never a problem. You can re-open the thread, if you like, and assign points, if you like. See:

SolutionOracle support does not support upgrading a system running ANY of their products using update-ux.
That is the case with many software vendors.
update-ux, or any kind of major version update/upgrade (11.23 to 11.31) is unreliable, problematic. It often fails to work, is not supported by software vendors and has caused you a lot of trouble.
Experienced Systems administrators use cold install.
Have a great day.

Re: ioscan runs very slow (3-5 min) after 11.31 OE upgrade
After thinking it twice, I agree with you 100% that it will be better to cold install and not to run update-ux (and if I can cold install OE on a brand new server box ;-)
Thanks a lot.

Re: ioscan runs very slow (3-5 min) after 11.31 OE upgrade
Produce a document Oh reknowned Salad-head.
This guy's issue has nothing to do with Oracle at all. Oracle INSTALLs in a different filesytem tree unaffected by any of the newly upgraded OS binaries.
Most often, the usual recommended course of action is to simply "re-link" Oracle executables on the freshened OS.
This guy's issue is with a messed up mass storage stack which is different/brand-new under HP-UX 11i v3 (aka 11.31).
Question - do you even run an HP-UX 11.31 system at all SEP? That is connected to a SAN?
Heya JRF... nice to see you're at the Top again man..! Truly quality posts and assistance to the community man!

Re: ioscan runs very slow (3-5 min) after 11.31 OE upgrade
I called oracle support last year and made the mistake of telling them the system was upgraded using update-ux.
They told me on the phone and told me they don't support it and that I should do a cold install of the system.
I pinged a few people I know that work in Oracle support and they said the same thing.
To be fair, in the end, I just opened a new TAR and did not tell them the system was upgraded by update-ux and they gave support and resolved the issue after about 17 days of back and forth.
Nobody I've asked has heard from A. Clay in 2.5 years since his last ITRC contribution. Nobody has seen him at an HP convention or event. There is someone on the new user group site using the name, but he has not responded to my pms. I did a search for obituaries and found nothing.
I met him in 2006 and found him to be a very knowledge, pleasant to drink with man with white hair and a sharp southern wit.
