Java process causing sudden increase in CPU Usage and significant performance degradation
-
This problem dates back to jan 2003 (a few months after we had installed our new server), had it again in July 2003 and last week (Tuesday) and again today (Oct 20, 2003)!
-
Here are the symptoms:
The Performance degradates rapidly with a sudden increase in CPU utilisation and user processes takes too much time to complete.
-
Am attaching some of outputs from Glance and TOP+Other details. In each case, we had to restart the server to sooze the problem.
-
Note that last week when the problem occurred and before restarting the server, we installed the following patch:
==============================================================================================
Patch Name: PHCO_29109
Patch Description: s700_800 11.11 Pthread enhancement and fixes
...
Critical:
Yes
PHCO_29109: HANG
Some customers reported seeing the hang every few
hours of operation.
PHCO_27632: HANG
PHCO_25751: ABORT
PHCO_25226: OTHER
Performance degradation and sudden increase in
CPU utilization due to mutex contention.
....
Symptoms:
PHCO_29109:
( SR:8606287920 CR:JAGae51853 )
Java processes can hang occasionally.
==============================================================================================
-
We thought that this would have fixed the problem...
This problem can't be simulated.
-
How do we proceed with further troubleshooting the problem?
-
Thank you for your time and precious replies.
-
best regards

Re: Java process causing sudden increase in CPU Usage and significant performance degradation

Thank you Bill for your reply. Unfortunately, the JMeter will only help next time we have the problem again. I will investigate further on this tool.
-
Bruno:
If you see my question above, you will see that i already have patch PHCO_29109 installed on my server.
-
Most suggestions will be most appreciated.

Re: Java process causing sudden increase in CPU Usage and significant performance degradation
system every two or three weeks. Thankfully I
have 2 CPU's so Java will only eat one of them.
This happens to me in the context of Mozilla
1.4 (I have the JRE plugin 1.4.1.03). In this
case I just kill Java (or exit Mozilla, same
effect). I do wonder sometimes why this
happens but it doesn't bother me enough yet, I
guess.
Kind regards, Christian

Re: Java process causing sudden increase in CPU Usage and significant performance degradation
-
Thank you for your the input.
-
Unfortunately, this patch(PHSS_29371) does not seem to have the solution since we are not running any interactive JAVA (graphic) programs.
-
In fact, we have an Event Monitor which runs with the following command:
$BASEDIR/jre/bin/java -classic -Xss1M -mx128M -classpath .:$CDIR/SMclient.jar:$C
DIR/SM700.jar:$CDIR/SM701.jar:$CDIR/SM702.jar:$CDIR/SM710.jar:$CDIR/SM711.jar:$CDIR/SM800.jar -Ddevmgr.datadir=/var/opt/SM devmgr.pmlauncher.unix.PMUNIXLauncher
>/dev/console 2>&1 &
-
Does someone have any other suggestions?
-
thanks and
best regards
