I've a K360 with 3 processors, 1Gb memory and 2Gb swap, running oracle 8 on HPUX11.
When the CPU till exceeds 90% for protracted periods the run queues remain low (2-3max).
These peaks can last for hours as invoicing routines run.
I've checked the kernel for the typical Oracle related config changes and all seems within tolerances.
Has anyone any ideas of how to approach investigating such a problem so as not to miss anything obvious.
for information we have glance installed.

SolutionHigh CPU utilization with a low run queue isn't necessarily bad. A single process on a server can consume 100% of the CPU and that wouldn't be bad at all. High utilization simply means taht the processor is being used. A deep run queue in addition may mean starvation for the processor. High I/O activity will lower CPU utilization as processes wait for I/O completion.
The document that Sanjay references is a good. Use it, along with 'glance' and other tools like 'sar' to begin to gain a view of your environment.

Re: K class CPU performance
If you are logged into the ITRC when you go to the Technical Knowledge Base, you should have access to the aforementioned document (# UPERFKBAN00000726). In any event, for your reading pleasure, I've attached a copy here.

Hope these help.
