kernel config question

Hallo,

I got a HP9000 machine and HP-UX 11V1 to play with. Somewhere I read that it is recommended to build a new kernel in order to save some resources. I created a new system file, but am not sure which modules I really need and which not. I checked with ioscan -f to see with drivers I need for sure. On the other hand I dont even know exactly what each module does. (So it seems btlan I need for sure) Where do I find some documentation concerning the tasks of each driver/module?

kind regards,
Amsel

Re: kernel config question

Shalom,

You sound like a newbie, forgive me if I'm wrong.

Best you read some doc on http://docs.hp.com and until then use sam to make kernel modifications.

sam
kernel configuration

It will do anything for you need in the short run.

btlan is built into the OS you don't need to do anything about it.

In general, kernel limits are too low for real life. Where to go with your configuration depends on what the server is to be used for.

If the hardware was installed when the OS was installed, most drivers are configured at install time.

Re: kernel config question

Shalom too,

Thanks for answering.

No, you are not mistaken, I am quite new on HP-UX.

The machine is only to get a little used to this Unix; it has no purpose at all.

SAM is easy to handle but also boring, I dont know what's going on in the background when doing something; this is a disadvantage :-(

So I think I have to go the hard way and ask either hp-docs or google step-by-step to gain "control" :)

Cheers,
