Kernel make failure

When trying to increase maxdsiz on my system going through the SAM interface, I get the following error message.

Cannot build a kernel using /usr/sbin/config. The standard output of the command is shown below:

Stop.

config: make did an exit(1)
The command exitted with exitcode -71.



I am just trying to get the kernel compiled until such time as I can find an appropriate reboot window. Thank you.

It would appear that some critical files may be missing in the /stand directory.

You should do an inventory or compare them to a system that working.

It also could be because a sam patch is needed, but thats less likely.

Hi Javier,

Frequently this can occur if there is not enough free space in /stand.
Look it over, if there's not free space equal to about 10% greater than the current kernel size, this could be the problem.
You'd have to do a little housecleaning first & then try again.
BTW - I don't recommend you relink & copy the new kernel in until you actually have the downtime. Doing so will break any routines that have to access the kernel structure. Typically performance measurement type of stuff.

Hi,
Increasing maxdsize is a rather common task, I have always used SAM to do this and never had any problem. Maybe a SAM patch problem.

As Jeff notes, rebuilding, then not booting from, a kernel can cause sar and perf functions to fail, and there always seem to be many more unusual errors that pop up until you reboot.

If you choose to rebuild ahead of time, don't wait too long, and beware of chasing bogus or weird errors.

if i remove all the .prev stuff, will this cause any problems? I think that my issue might be related to not having enough space as my bdf shows that /stand is at 93% full.

Hi,

See how big is your current and kernel and how much space you have free in /stand (bdf /stand). If it is not sufficient, then I don't think you have a good choice except to move vmunix.prev to another filesystem (doesn't help to boot ofcourse, just as a blind backup) and try it again. Usually if is a space issue, you should get that error explicitly displayed.
