kernel problems

I did something really dumb this morning. One of our programers asked me to make some kernel changes to see if we could get informix to run better on our server (rp3440 w/hpux 11.23). Well I made the changes and the server rebooted and crashed. I can not even get into single user or maintenance mode.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get my server up and running aging?

Re: kernel problems

You should be able to boot from /stand/vmunix.prev which will put you back to where you were before your "improvements".
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: kernel problems

Are you getting any errors when booting in single user or maintenance mode?

is your boot disk mirrored?

last resort would be recover from ignite tape.

Re: kernel problems

I tried the command: hpux /stand/vmunix.prev and got the error of no such file or directory.

Re: kernel problems

If you aren't familiar with the process, then intterupt the normal boot and enter "BOOT PRI".

Interact with ISL/IPL? Y

At the ISL/IPL prompt enter:
hpux /stand/vmunix.prev
or if you want to enter single-user mode
hpux -is /stand/vmunix.prev
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: kernel problems

Okay, when you get to the ISL prompt, try "ll /stand/backup" and hopefully you have at least one backup kernel. I haven't actually tried to boot an 11.23 boot from the backup kernel but under 11.23 there is a /stand/backup/vmunix kernel and that is probably your boy.

I would try:
hpux /stand/backup/vmunix
amd may the Force be with you.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: kernel problems

I had to use the os disk to boot my server and then repaire the lvol1, lvol2 & lvol3. After that I was able to boot from the backup/vxunix. Now I have to rebuild my kernel.

Does this mean that you were trying to boot from the SAN.
