Re: large files
Its probably the filesystem you are making the tar on.
fsadm can be used to convert the filesystem to largefiles.
If you are 11.00 or below you need to mount a filesystem formatted with largefiles with the largefiles parameter in fstab. This requirement was dropped in 11i v1.
If you can do the filesystem over, umount it and use newfs -F vxfs -o largefiles /dev/rlvol6 to in an example do a new filesystem with largefiles.
WARNING: last command is destructive of data.

Re: large files
Does your Filesystem support largefiles:
fsadm /home/oracle
If not, do the following:
fsadm -F vxfs -o largefiles /home/oracle
for more info do a man fsadm_vxfs.

Re: large files
You can check with what options the filesystem was created using :
mkfs -m

Re: large files
What is the size of the file? And what is the error you are getting?
Even with patch the tar will be limited to a file size of 8gb.

Re: large files
There are a few other options as well to be used for this problem. Find these in this thread
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=886938
Even after the patch installation if this is the error then possibally the patch was not installed properly or could have been corrupted filesets. A close look at the patch installation logs would halp in finding the real issue.
