linux, unix, windows

Hello,

It is again management question. Could you share very general yet up-to-date information/description of Linux as it relates to other UNIX, specifically HP-UX and Windows.

Thanks,
Elena.

Re: linux, unix, windows

Hi Elena,
I have worked on HPUX and Windows but not on linux. But still i can compare HPUX with linux/windows to some extent:

HPUX v/s Linux/Windows

1. more relaible as compared to Linux/Windows
2. Secured
3. Propreitary Hardware/Software leads to increased stability
4. Less User Friendly as comapred to Linux/Windows
5. Needs proper knowledge of the OS to work with but windows/linux can be used to some extent even if you have limited knowledge.
6. Preffered more in critical setup,s like Online real time Applications

That's all i can recollect.
Hope that helps.

Re: linux, unix, windows

Right tool for the right job.

If you need to run a windows ap that won't work with Unix, then you need Windows.

In general, Linux and HP-UX can do anything a Windows server can do with the exception of Exchange server. That functionality is available in the open source community as well.

Can you narrow your question a bit?

Re: linux, unix, windows

With that last question you tossed out there;

Management wants to hear some of the buzz words (acronyms) such as ROI, TCO, etc...
Return on Investment, Total Cost of Ownership, etc.

Lots of places to gather this information from. Numerous documents that provide details about this management stuff. http://www.gartner.com is a place to start.

A model I like:
Pick two of the three items in the triangle:
............Cheap
................/\
............../__\
............/____\
........../______\
......../________\
....../__________\
..Fast..............Reliable

But you can ONLY pick two.

Re: linux, unix, windows

Linux is free, support is cheap and supports variety of HWs and TCO and ROI is lower than Windows. Windows is useful in Desktop PCs, managing windows in server env is a tauting tasks especially patching, rebooting, hanging, etc.. etc..
