linux vs. hpux ..

Hey everyone,
I have just been informed that we might move over to linux. Now I am wondering what are the pros and cons on linux vs. hpux. And if it is difficult to move from HPUX to linux from a sys admin standpoint.

Thanks,
Richard

Re: linux vs. hpux ..

Richard,

linux is different than hpux, and hpux is different than linux.

As in:

admin tools
performance tuning
patch installs
backup/restores
security

But, it's really an issue of: "Will my applications run???"

What you need to do is get a PC, load linux on it (flavor is your choice), and start playing!!!

Re: linux vs. hpux ..

Hi Richard,
It is not that a difference.

As Harry says only few things are different. swinstall is different, All file locations at different place. Easy to remember. kernal built is little different.
But if you know the basic of unix then linux is easy.
You will not have any problem at all.
When i first touch Linux I was on the run next day. There are many many graphics utility to fix many stuff.
I am using Redhat7.2 because it has nice loader "grub".

Re: linux vs. hpux ..

Richard, I use Linux in a very limited way in this office, but I can state that there are many differences between it and HPUX. That said, there are tons of simularities. As with all *NIX style operating systems, there's more in common than not.

Re: linux vs. hpux ..

Richard,

The BEST thing your company possibly going to linux, is that at least it's NOT M$

We have denied every attempt by our business groups from attempting to put M$ products facing the internet. The only way we will allow it, is if it is NOT part of our network, and it must be able to prove that it can withstand hackers. Well in the past five years we've had nothing in the M$ world that can meet that requirement.

In the past, linux installs usually left your machine wide open to simple hacks. Today, companies like redhat have shut off most network services, which makes my network people a little happier. I won them over because our Cisco content switch runs a linux kernel :-)

"different" - well it's like a cold pool. It's all speculation 'til you dive in - then it's only uncomfortable for a few "minutes".
So, jump in chap & start treading!
If you can make it here...you can make it anywhere....hmmmm...seems like I've heard that somewhere :~)

Re: linux vs. hpux ..

Wow we can post and it didnt take 30 minutes to try to get to the webpage. But they want to run an informix database on linux. I would really perfer to say with HPUX though. But I was told to "learn Linux" just in case.
