I have been using some free software on one of my HP9000 N class servers for the last year without any problems up until a couple weeks ago. The command is "locate" and is used for databases. A couple weeks ago I started receiveing a memory falut, often followed by a core dump when using the command. I reloaded the software but to no avail. I can not think of any system changes that I have made that would have affected the command and becasue it is freeware there is no technical help. Is there a way to read the core dump file or does anyone have any idea why locate has stopped working?

Have you patched at all? Could a good starting place.

Usually I get an idea of what a core file is about by

cat core | strings | more

It is a little long, but you will get the jist.

You are probably encountering a memory limit. What was the actual error message? Also, is your maxdsiz's set to? If they are the default 64mb, bump it up to 256mb.

Interpreting the core dump file is the best way to determine the root cause. HP has the tools to do this. You can also use the cdb debugger to trace the stack in yr core file to determine which part of the program is faulty. I would give the core file to HP and see what they say.
