also check the /home file system has enough space available.

Is there a home directory for jules and does this directory have the correct permissions?

You need to check how this user was setup. As stated above make sure that the /home directory does exist for this user.

This can occur if your home directory is over NFS and the server is down but somehow NIS is still working.
