Lost root password

I've obtained an old HP 712 server from a company I was worked. It is loaded with HP-UX 10.20 and OpenView. My goal is to set it up at my house to be used to improve my sys admin skills. My problem is I do not know the password and do not want to reinstall the o/s yet.

Is there a way to change the root password through maintenance mode and how best to gain access to maintenance mode.

Thanks,

Re: Lost root password

Boot into single user mode. The root prompt should come up for you. You could issue the passwd root and change the passwd.

Boot in single user mode.

Re: Lost root password

To get to single user mode:

Power cycle the box.
Interrupt the boot sequence when prompted (after hardware checks).
"bo pri"
"y" (to interact with IPL/ISL)
"hpux -is"

Thanks, guys. I'll try this when I get home tonight. Based on how well it goes, I'll be back tomorrow to assign points.

Later.
