make_recovery

Ok im sure there is a simple answer to this Question. I have three HP 9000 Server
Server A, has connected Tape library
Server B, has no connected tape drives
Server C, has no connected Tape drives

Server A, I can run the make_recovery -Av /dev/rmt/1m, or 2m corrosponding to the side of the library.

Now my question is how would i backup server's B, and C to Server A's Tape library ?

I have OmniBack setup on server A to to regular backups of the other box's without any problems.
Reboot and let me know in twenty

Re: make_recovery

Hi,

Run make_recovery -Av SERVERA:/dev/rmt/1m

SERVERA- hostname of serverA

Run this from serverB and serverC

Re: make_recovery

Hi,
If you have space on one of the systems, you could do network archives.

Re: make_recovery

Hi,

Try make_net_recovery. Take a look at this file on your system, /opt/ignite/share/doc/makenetrec.txt

Hope this helps.

Re: make_recovery

This can be done by sharing the tape drive between two servers... although it's not recommended.

in any case if a server goes down, you're going to have to boot it from tape which requires h/w removal, it is be best to
a> buy new tape drives
or
b> move onto the host you're backing up.

I'd go though with network recovery and ignite server.

Not really answering your question, but giving my 2 cents!

Good Luck,
Bill

It works for me (tm)

I agree with Bill. Since tape drives are inexpensive, I recommend you buy one for server B and C just in case your server fails. Another reason is you have the option of booting it up using the tape drive.

Re: make_recovery

Hello,

Ignite make_recovery and make_tape_recovery do not support the use of remote tape devices.

The command to use for this would be make_net_recovery. There is a document that is loaded with the ignite program in the directory /opt/ignite/share/doc/makenetrecovery.txt that explains how to use this command.

You can then backup the image to your tape library. In the event you needed to restore the system you can use the Ignite GUI and "push" the installation of the image to the client from the Ignite server, or you can "pull" the image back onto the client from the boot prompt using the command "boot lan.192.168.1.1 install" where the IP address is that of your ignite server. This requires that both systems are on the same subnet or the use of a boot helper.

Your other options are to buy additional tape drives, but really not necessary if you use the make_net_recovery capabilities.
