multiple OS on RX2600 Itanium

I have read where you can load multiple OS's ie. HPUX Linux and Windows and boot them up but I wanted to clarify does this mean they can all be up and running at the same time?? any help will be apprecated

The Itanium platform can run Windows, Linux or HP-UX. I don't think you can run them all at the same time.

Re: multiple OS on RX2600 Itanium

Hey hookemhorns! Did you get your RP8400 up and running okay? We just purchased our 4th, with probably 2 more on the way.

Yeah, you can put multiple OS's on a hard disk, and use something like Partition Magic to run one or more of the OS's. But not all at once. That will get REALLY ugly. There are some cross-platform utilities, like Lindows. But again they're ugly, and are only for the true masochist or the desperate.

I once had Windows 3.1 running in an X11 environment. It worked, but not well.

Sun used to sell (prolly still does) an AMD chip on a card that would fit inside their SPARC station and run Windows with a Unix wrapper. There's a guy here who is doing this and he loves it: its the only time he's never crashed a Win98 system.

FWIW: I wouldn't do this on a bet.

Yes we did....love it I appreciate the help. I was exploring ways to run HPUX and Windows on the same server, if the rx2600 supported hardware partitioning I know we could do it but I don't believe it does, anyway thanks again, we are looking at at 7410 and possibly and 8400 was was your quote on the 8400....just curious want to compare with our quote

Re: multiple OS on RX2600 Itanium

Neither the rx2600 nor the rx5670 support partitioning at this time. As you surmised, partitioning (hard partioning) is available with the rp7410, rp8400 and the Superdomes.

To run Linux or Windows Server 2003 you need a system with IPF processors. (There is a PA-RISC Linux port, but I'm not sure how stable it is relative to the IPF stuff).

HP have announced TPC-C results for an IPF Superdome, but I don't know if the "formal" launch has taken place. I suspect that announcements for systems between the rx5670 and the IPF Superdome would be at some point in the not tooo distant future.

Reply to Rick Jones:
I've got Debian Linux up and running on a C3000 workstation. Its stable, but the install was really, really HUGELY ugly. There are several gotcha's--the default install doesn't include IDE or USB drivers, so it has to use a dumb terminal and a SCSI drive. Getting all the drivers loaded and compiled was almost as frustrating as loading Win95.

Reply to hookemhorns:
Yeah, give me a call and we can compare quotes: five one two two four eight three one seven eight. I think we got a super deal on the ones we bought, but I'd like to see what you got.

Come to think of it: I've got a VAR taking me to lunch tommorrow (5/13) so the timing could be pretty good.

Re: multiple OS on RX2600 Itanium

Sorry to hear the Debian installs were difficult. Perhaps they will get easier over time. Thusfar, my RH AS 2.1 installs have been almost pleasant. Now, my FreeBSD 5.0 installs on the other hand...well, that's another story :)
