need some script help please

I'm curious. I see at least three different solutions here that work. A shell script, an awk command, and a Perl command.

Which one did you finally go with?

Yes, after overcoming my typos and misuse of shells, I am finally putting these to use.

I am most comfortable with the script and I'm pushing myself to learn awk.

The perl line works extremely well too.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to post. I'm learning.
