Got HPUX 11.11 on L1000.
It is loaded with Ignite B.3.0.502. I want to upgrade with the latest C.6.7.x
There is an Ignite tape made with the older version that is important.
Question - if I upgrade the Ignite will I still be able to work with the tape from the older version?
Thanks

SolutionIt seems to me that if you are using tape (like you said), and during the install you blow away the whole contents of drives, etc (as you would expect from an ignite restore) - then it simply *couldn't* matter. Because the level you're going to get of Ignite is going to be whatever is on the tape... regardless of what's on the system "right now", right?

Re: new version compatible with old version?
I'm not sure what you mean by "...work with the tape from the older version".
You would certainly be able to recover from it (it's self-contained) and you certainly can extract files from its 'pax' archive.
I would think, though, that after upgrading Ignite you would want to create a new tape archive too. Am I missing something?

Re: new version compatible with old version?
It is my belief that this old important archive needs to be done again to assure compatability with the new Ignite server.
There is a less than perfect record of downward compatability with this product.

Re: new version compatible with old version?
This system is at 11.11 and has an Ignite tape made with the Ignite B.3.0.502.
Going to do a fresh install to 11.23. I will upgrade the Ignite on the new OS to the C.6.7.x version as well.
The possibility exists that we may have to backtrack to the 11.11 OS. This would be done using the Ignite tape created previously (B.3.0.x)
Question is, if I install to 11.23 with Ignite C.6.7.x and if for some reason I need to go back to 11.11, can I use the Ignite tape created at Ignite version B.3.0.x?

Re: new version compatible with old version?
If I need to backtrack to 11.11, do so with the new Ignite tape I just created
Sound good?
Important that I be able to backtrack to the 11.11 OS

Re: new version compatible with old version?
If that machine that you're restoring to had HPUX 9.x, 10.x, 11.0, 11.11, or even 11.21 with or even without Ignite on it, it wouldn't matter. You can restore that whole machine from the tape (not necessarily a n/w Ignite server), blowing away everything on it, and putting the old OS and partitions (including the old Ignite) in its place.
Really, I believe it's no different than if you just recieved a new or used box that you want to clone to. Regardless of whose old (or newer) junk is or was on it, you'd get whatever you put from the Ignite tape onto the server - that's what it's for!

Yes, the Ignite tape holding 11.11 can be used to restore the server to 11.11. It has a LIF to boot from and an archive from which to cold-install.

Re: new version compatible with old version?
As said an ignite tape is self contained, so if you were to use it, it would be like reinstalling 11.11 (at the time the tape was generated...)so the C.6.7 ... it has no knowledge of.
All the best
