NTP

Ou Business has a compliment of HP-UX servers currently running 10.2, but are currently purchasing a number of units with release 11.0i. We are planning on reusing two to three of the 10.2's to act as NTP servers. The configurations do not seem to be too difficult until we get to the source issues. We want to use the GPS units (Symmetricom SSU2000)which are located in different subnets throughout the company. I know that the NTP out of the SSU2000's are making it to the units, but when I try to set them up as the servers for the HP-UX's they would rather use the internal clock. Is there a way to define the SSU's on this private network, as an external clock for the HP-UX's? I am sure I will have more questions to get this done, but I am frustrated that every other PC and SONET eqpt will take the SSU as a good NTP or SNTP source except the HP servers.

Re: NTP

What do you have in your /etc/ntp.conf file? What does /sbin/init.d/xntpd start say? What does /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log say about xntpd? There are dozens of options listed in the /etc/ntp.conf comments but you only need the server line. Start by verifying that the SSU is reachable by using ping by IP addresss. Then verify DNS with ping by hostname. Both must work for NTP to function. Then use ntpq -p IP_address. It should return information about the SSU's time stats. If not, it may require an authentication code which was setup in the SSU box.
