OS upgrade

Hi Guys,
Can anyone help, I have a L-Class server with 2 x 36GB internal harddisk running on HP-UX 11.00. This two hardisk is a mirror copy of each other.

1) I would like to change the two harddisk to 2 x 73GB. Thus, the only way is to use Ignite Recovery to backup and restore. but, have I to break the mirror copy first and backup or I can backup directly without breaking mirror. Than how can I get the mirror copy back.

2) I would also like to upgrade the OS from verion 11.00 to 11.11 . Can someone advice how can I proceed with thia.

3) I also have a VA7100 with 3 x 73GB harddisk, can someone advice how can I configure it to raid 1 and 1 hotspare. ( please advice with the command )

Re: OS upgrade

1). Ignite recovery would be the best to change the root disks to a bigger one. If they are non root, you may be able to vgextend to these two 73Gigs and then pvmove or mirror them and then break them.

2).Upgrades are no god in hpux , would prefer a cold install.

3). No comments .. hv;nt worked on this

Re: OS upgrade

1) I agree that Ignite recovery is the best. However, I believe you will run into a PE (physical extent per volume group) limitation if you vgextend a 36GB group with 73GB disks. But since I think you want to get rid of two vg00 36GB in favor of 73, it's not a problem.

I have to admit I've only had to re-ignite a system once, but I seem to recall that the mirroring configuration was one of the things that Ignite preserves -- so re-mirroring shouldn't be an issue. Nonetheless, this document has the info you need to mirror:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5990-8172/5990-8172.pdf

2) I agree that the 10.20->11.00 upgrade was abysmal, but HP admitted it as well (eventually). I haven't had trouble with the 11.00->11.11 upgrade and have done it several times. There's a document dedicated to it (you need to use the "date" that matches your 11.11 CD set):

http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11i.html#Installing%20and%20Updating

3) Sorry, I haven't used a VA either. But this may help:

If not, you can always try running SAM to see what it thinks of the array. This was a workable strategy for an AutoRAID 12/H, and I think the 7100 is supposed to have been its replacement.

Re: OS upgrade

1). Easiest way is to ignite the box. Create an ignite tape (I use make_recovery -A -C -v -i). This will force you into an interactive recovery when booted off the tape. Then simply select one of the new 73GB disks to recover to. Ignite does not preserve mirroring so you will need to do it from scratch after the system is up. One of the big advantages of this is that your 36GB disks are completely unaffected by this, and you can boot back and forth between the systems. In fact, this is an excellent time to upgrade to 11.11 (post #2) as your first set of disks can be your fall back if the upgrade doesn't work.

2). I followed the manual just a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm. Just pay close attention to patch levels and firmware.

3). Sorry can't help on this one.

Re: OS upgrade

1) Use ignite
2) If you are doing an in place upgrade then just run the upgrade program from the install CD's. But if I were you I would just do a clean install and recovery necessary files. The install is less bloated that way.
3) Check your command view documentation on how to do it. Look at the armmgr command. I am not that familiar with it. But if I had time to sit with it, I could probably figure it out.
