Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Hi Folks,

I just bought two Apollo Series 700 boxes. They did not have any Hard Drives.

I plugged in a HD and an external CD-ROM drive. I'm trying to install HP-UX 11.0 version June 2002.

I boot off the CD-ROM for insrtall then after a while the screen goes blank and I get a Panic: "Stored Message bugger up to Panic". "Could not open kernal System Table"

Folks...I really need some help here! I've got two of these boxes, and I need to get them up for our Dev guy's, and right now we're down.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

These are really old machines. Can you provide the model numbers?

Wonder what OS supports them, if the media you attached is compatible.

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

It doesn't like that disk drive.

Is it the right kind based on your scsi card?

I kind of doubt it.

You might want to dive back into ebay and obtain a couple of boot disks for those pups once you look up the specs.

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Hi Bobby,

I'm not positive, but I don't think Apollo 700 series system can run HP-UX 11. I think they can only run 10.2 or lower.
If they can, then they would probably need THE most current firmware to do so.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Folks,

Thanks for the quick responses. So here is some more info:

1.)The HD I was trying is a Seagate ST34572W. It has a 68 pin connector. I'm using a convertor to plug it into the standard SCSI 50 pin cable the apollo supports.

Now, this HD does actually have HPUX data on it from a Model 712. I've tried this HD plus two different. One specifically with a standard SCSI connection, the 50 pin connector. All with the same result.

2.) How can I find out if the Apollo 700 series actually can or will support HPUX 11.0 or if I indeed need to update the firmware? Is there any site that has this spec?

Thanks...Bobby

I can help you with this. I just loaded 11.0 on a 712 last week. Others on the forum have also. But, I doubt if you call in a support call to hp that they are going to do very much as it is unsupported by hp.

I also know where you can get a couple more cheap 712's with the hard drive with 11.0 already installed.

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

712's aren't "Apollo" series, as I recall.
I do have a 712 at home with 11i on it, but I believe
my Apollo 715 is running 9.04 or 10.20. I'd have to check.

I also encountered problems trying to load 11i on the Apollo 715.
Not without 2 backups and an Ignite image!

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Official support for 700s systems was only continued for those systems featuring a LASI I/O-controller. which are:

712/{60,80,100}
715/{64,80,100}
725/100
743i/{64,100}
744/{132L,165}
748i/{64,100,132,165L}

With careful review of OS patches older systems could also be made to run 11.00 though.

The last 11.00 HP-UX version reported to run on 735 and 755 should from March 2000. This also means that the latest "HP-UX General Release Patches" that do not hose the 735/755 are also from March 2000.

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Curt,

Did you run into any problems with a panic installing 11.0 on your apollo series 700? Can you shed any light on why I am or how to get around it?

What type of Hard Drive are you using?

My comment to a 712 is only that I tried using a HD from a 712 in the apollo series 700. Still got the same problem.

Thanks...Bobby

no

Can you shed any light on why I am or how to get around it?

1) I hope you gave the insides a good look see when you installed the hard drive. all the memory is firmly in place, the i/o connectors all attached, nothing seems out of place or missing, etc.

2) get to the PDC menu. check everything that you can. how much memeory is there, and diagnostic messages, etc. Get your firmware level.

3) hpip cards aren't supported at 11.0 and some eisa cards aren't either. I'd take out any cards that I don't know for sure will work.

4) eliminate as many unknowns as possible.
the cd should boot even without a hard installed (not going to do much, but you know the cd is good if it does). if the cd by itself doesn't boot, then it the system (cpu,memory,scsi controller), scsi connection/cable, scsi terminator, cdrom drive, or cd.

5) i don't know what a SMP-130DR is. So, it would be helpful to know what the system model number is, 7?? and also the manufacture and model of the cd-rom that you are using.

What type of Hard Drive are you using?

a hp 2490, 2G se scsi

My comment to a 712 is only that I tried using a HD from a 712 in the apollo series 700. Still got the same problem.

did you try booting from the hard drive from the 712?

my first guess was that of Mr. Potter, the hard drive that your using is incompatible with the system. But, using a probably good drive is pushing me towards a problem/incompatibility with the cd rom drive.

hope this help out

Re: Panic when installing HP-UX 11

Curt,

Good suggestions here. Well, I did try two different external CD-ROM's and tried booting without a Hard Drive.

The same problem occurred, getting a Panic on a pure CD-ROM boot.

I don't know...thinking about cutting my loses here and getting another 32bit box to install HP-UX 11.0 on.

Any reccomendations for a 32bit box that will work easily with HP-UX 11.0? We need 32 bit for our dev to build our product on.

Thanks...Bobby

well that is kind of hard to give a recomendation without knowing your requirements (disk space, memeory, etc), but i'll give some suggestions.

some assumptions)
your doing installs/support via a external cdrom, ie no need for a internal cd

backups being done over your network, no need for a back device

price is more of a consideration than performance or supportability

1) very cheap, <$50 and slow
712/{60,80,100}
715/{64,80,100}
725/100

the 712's are pretty easy to find on ebay or from resellers. The 712/100 are pretty good. you'll probably find them with a 2G drive, 128M memory, and a 10M network connection.

11.0 is going to take at least a Gig of disk, so unless your going to replace it don't get a 1G or less hard drive and CDE is going to be pretty slow with only 128M of memory. but if you run headless and your app isn't very large it'll work.

you can get se scsi to connect externally if you need extra disk space.

2) for $100-$200 would be the B/C class workstations. the 180/200/240 Mhz systems are plentiful on ebay or from resellers.

they will probably come with 256M memory, 4G hard drive. Sometimes you can find ones with 9G drives and 512M of memory

and these support 10 or 100Mhz networks.

myself I'd say that a C200 or C240 is well worth the $200 more, but I'm not doing the purchasing.

It is against the forums rules to advertise, but if you want to give out your email address, I'll contact you about specifics. I'm not a reseller, but if you put your email address out here, I'm sure a few will contact you.
