patching requirements

when trying to patch one of our unix servers whose sole purpose is to run the oracle application server, i got this error for the patches listed below:
'may only be installed upon a previously installed base fileset. The
specification for this base fileset is'
OS-Core.C-MIN,fr=B.11.23,v=HP

ACXX.ACXX,fr=C.06.00,v=HP

Auxiliary-Opt.LANG-AUX,fr=B.11.23.06,v=HP

ProgSupport.C2-INC,fr=B.11.23,v=HP

OS-Core.CORE2-64SLIB,fr=B.11.23,v=HP

How do i go about identifying what these items are and is it possible that a unix server that is dedicated to running oracle's application server (10g) doesn't require them ??

Re: patching requirements

for each of the filesets noted above we get this:
The patch fileset "PHCO_32255.CORE-ENG-A-MAN,r=1.0" may only
be installed upon a previously installed base fileset. The
specification for this base fileset is
"OS-Core.CORE-ENG-A-MAN,fr=B.11.23,v=HP". Since there is no
fileset on the target or selected from the source which
matches this specification, fileset
"PHCO_32255.CORE-ENG-A-MAN,r=1.0" will be excluded.

Re: patching requirements

Most likely when this server was built, the man pages were left out to conserver space. That's why you get this error. Run "swlist -l fileset" and see if the OS-Core.CORE-ENG-A-MAN is installed.
If not, you should consider installing it. Otherwise everytime you install a patch, within swinstall you have to descent into the patch filesets and exclude the man pages from it.

Re: patching requirements

You are trying to install a patch that
is looking for a product that was never installed or removed.
Did you do a patch analysis on the server
or just patches recommended by Oracle?

From experience Oracle, patch recommendations
are usually a few years behind. The patches
they recommend have usually been superceeded
a couple of times.

Re: patching requirements

how do i go about identifying what the other filesets are referring to (ACXX.ACXX,fr=C.06.00,v=HP

Auxiliary-Opt.LANG-AUX,fr=B.11.23.06,v=HP

ProgSupport.C2-INC,fr=B.11.23,v=HP

OS-Core.CORE2-64SLIB,fr=B.11.23,v=HP

Re: patching requirements

You should ignore what Oracle said about those patches. If you don't have the compiler installed you can't install the patches.

>how do I go about identifying what the other filesets are referring to

You are looking at the problem backwards. The swinstall error log says what patch won't install. There is no need to look up ACXX and Auxiliary-Opt since you don't have them.
