patching vPar software

Question for you people that ave patched vPar software. The procedure we received from the 3rd-party-consultants working for the company that sold/built the systems was...
To patch vPat software, you must bring down all the vPars, that apply the vPar patches while running under the normal hp-ux kernel. Then bring the vPars back up.
When patching last month, the vPar software was patched while it was up and running. But not by me. Anyone done this - patched vPar software while it was up and running ?

Re: patching vPar software

This is discussed on page 109 in the Managing Vpars manual at:
http://docs.hp.com/en/6018/T1335-90031.pdf

Essentially, if you are applying patches to a Vpar that do NOT update the Vpar software, this is just like patching a normal OS instance, it can be done with the Vpar software running.
If, however, you are patching teh Vpar software, you need to take all the Vpars in an Npar down, boot into an Npar, update/patch the first Vpar.
You then reboot back into Vpar mode, and now patch the remaining Vpars in the Npar with the Vpars running.

Re: patching vPar software

We just upgraded the Virtual Partition product (T1335AC) using the "updating" procedure in the "Installing and Managing HP-UX Virtual Partitions" manual. You shut down all the partitions and bring the system up into standalone mode (normal kernel not running on vpmon). You install the new vPars bundle on the first partition and then boot the system and bring up the other vPars. Then you install the new bundle on the remaining vPars.

So only the first install is done on the normal kernel (vmunix). The other partitions are done running on vpmon.
