Performance Thresholds

Hello All,

I am looking for the documentation which will contain the recommended values for the optimum performance of my HP Server.
Specifically, I would like to know the optimum values for

I/O Wait Time (sar "%wio")
Kernel CPU % (sar "%sys")
User CPU %( sar "%usr")
Disk Service Time (sar -d "avserv")
Swap Outs (vmstat -S "so")
Pagescans (vmstat -S "sr")
...

Is there any documentation which will tell me the limiting values for the above performance monitoring parameters?

Regards,
Kedar.

Re: Performance Thresholds

Hello Gopinath,

Thanks for the information.
But I am more interested in knowing the optimum VALUES for those performance parameters. (Not the reference documentation, which will explain MEANING of those parameters)

Based on the recommended values, I can fine tune my system or identify Alarm / Warning conditions.

Regards,
Kedar.

Re: Performance Thresholds

There is no holy grail on perfmanace parameters.

I have seen systems with load factors of 40 that are running just fine. I've seen systems with load factors of .5 that run like dogs.

Performance is a little more subtle than that.

I find I've learned a lot from a book.

You'll learn what you need to know from this book.

Re: Performance Thresholds

"optimum VALUES " depends on a lot of factors...out of the box, HP-UX is configured optimally - for running HP-UX...

Tuning depends on the application...Oracle, SAP, Apache, or whatever....

Best bet it to find out from your application vendor their recommended settings.
